McDonald House Charities awards scholarships to graduates

Timothy Coogan and Jahaira Navarro, 2007 graduates of Holyoke High School, were among the recipients of $2,000 scholarships from the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts Scholarship Program. As two of 25 area students (18 from Connecticut and 7 from Western Massachusetts) selected by a panel of judges to receive the scholarship, Coogan will attend the University of Massachusetts and Navarro will attend Temple University this fall.

In addition to the annual Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources Program (HACER), RMHC provided even more support and educational assistance to a greater number of students by offering a National Scholarship. The National Scholarship provides dollars to graduating high school seniors regardless of race of ethnicity. The 2007 awards totaled $50,000 and was supported by the RMHC/HACER program and the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts McDonald's Owner/Operator Association (CWMMOA). The 2007 recipients in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts were chosen from a pool of over 400 local applicants by judges, including local McDonald's owner/operators.

"We are proud to sponsor the RMHC/HACER scholarship program locally to students to help them achieve their education and career goals," says Betty Bergstrom, president of RMHC of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. "All of the recipients are extremely deserving. They have demonstrated passion and perseverance to overcome challenges and triumph in many areas of their lives. We wish them continued success in college and beyond."

Scholarship recipients were selected based upon their academic achievement, financial need, community involvement, and Hispanic heritage for the HACER Scholarship.

The Western Massachusetts scholarship recipients are:

Tafoul Abdelmagid of West Springfield, graduate of West Springfield High School, attending Dartmouth College

Timothy Coogan of Holyoke, graduate of Holyoke High School, attending the University of Massachusetts

Kevin Johnson of Ludlow, graduate of Ludlow High School, attending the University of Massachusetts

Jahaira Navarro of Holyoke, graduate of Holyoke High School, attending Temple University

Louis Reid of Belchertown, graduate of Belchertown High School, attending Wentworth Institute of Technology

"All of the McDonald's owner/operators throughout Connecticut and Western Massachusetts are committed to programs that support schools and students," says Jim McGarry, president of CWMMOA. "We are proud of our role in helping these students achieve their educational goals. We are especially proud to honor students who share our commitment to giving back to the community."
