Museum Family Fun series will continue in May

The Springfield Museums' Weekend Family Fun series will continue on May 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Japanese Children's Day. Activities are free with museum admission.

Weekend Family Fun programs are sponsored by TD Banknorth.

Performance:

Isshin Taiko, a Japanese-style drumming group from Western Massachusets, will present a spirited performance that combines the thunderous sounds of big drums with the melodies of the Japanese bamboo flute, and features synchronized rhythm, movement and voice. The group's name comes from Isshin, which means "one heart" or "wholehearted," and Taiko, which means big drums; 1:30 p.m., on the Quadrangle green (indoors if it rains).

Ongoing Activities, George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum:

Gyotaku - Use of molds made from real fish to do gyotaku, Japanese fish printing: 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Sumi-e Brush Painting workshop - noon-1:30 p.m.

Jin Shin Jyutsu - Christine Dupont will demonstrate this holistic healing art based on ancient understanding of the connections between mind and body; noon-3 p.m.

"Karp Kite" - make your own along with other Japanese crafts, noon-3:45 p.m.

The Springfield Museums are located on the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards Street off Chestnut Street in downtown Springfield. Free parking is available in the Edwards Street parking lots. House are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. (Science Museum open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.). Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and college students, $5 for children 3-17, and free for children under three and museum members. The fee provides admission to all four museums and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden. Beginning May 1, Springfield residents are free with proof of address.
