GRADUATING WITH HONORS

Luke Sacharczyk of East Longmeadow was honored by the University of Hartford during commencement ceremonies in May. Sacharczyk, who earned a bachelor of science in business administration, graduated summa cum laude from the Barney School of Business.

Sacharczyk earned the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants Senior Merit Award and the University of Hartford Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Study of Accounting. He was also the recipient of the Barney School’s Barnard Flaxman Award for Outstanding Seniors and a University Regents’ Honor Award. The Regents’ and Flaxman awards are among the highest recognition bestowed by Barney and the University on graduating students. Both awards acknowledge exceptional academic performance and productivity.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Kristen Gernux ‘13 of Hampden was the one of a record 303 Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) students receiving ECSU Foundation’s competitive scholarships in the 2011-12 academic year. The allotted scholarships total $334,000 in funds awarded through the ECSU Foundation’s annual scholarship process. Gernux is majoring in English and was awarded the ECSU Community Youth Scholarship.

The foundation’s competitive scholarship awards are based on merit and unmet financial need.

“The ECSU Foundation plays an important role in that it often provides financial support to our students for the last critical amount of money they need to continue their goal of obtaining a college degree,” Kenneth DeLisa, vice president for institutional advancement, said.
