Nutcracker workshop at Holyoke Library will introduce children to music, dance

HOLYOKE A special holiday workshop to introduce youngsters to the magic and the music of "The Nutcracker" for children five to eight years old will take place at Holyoke Public Library on Dec. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Children participating in the program will experience "The Nutcracker" in a variety of ways under the guidance and performances of teachers and students from the Massachusetts Academy of Ballet. The workshop will include a reading of the original Nutcracker story by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Children will also be introduced to the magnificent Tchaikovsky score for the ballet with beautiful music for the Sugar Plum Fairy, Russian and Chinese Dances, Waltz of the Flowers and other familiar excerpts.

Crafts related to the Nutcracker story and naturally, dancing will also be important elements of the afternoon program.

Children participating in the program will have an opportunity to learn the Chinese and Russian dances and parents will be invited to watch the final five minutes and join their children and members of the Massachusetts Academy of Ballet for holiday refreshments.

The Nutcracker Program is being supported in part by a grant from the Holyoke Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
