Students become 'Keepers of Mill Pond'

6th graders Eric Meisterling of Somers, Phillip Antonacci of Somersville, Matthew Antonacci of Somersville, Henry Marshall of Springfield, Jesse Joffray of Somers, Connor Perry of Longmeadow, Andrew Mordasky of Stafford Springs, Kevin Murdoch, Somers, Jeffrey Mayotte of Hampden.

As part of their typical science curriculum, students at The Grammar School at Somersville have taken to calling themselves the "Keepers of Mill Pond" which is located on School Street in Somersville, CT. Partly due to its close proximity to the school just next door, and because they frequently test the water, track the plant and animal wildlife in and around the pond and study the seasonal changes that occur within the pond and its surroundings. However, with the severe flooding the pond and dam experienced in the fall of 2005, the dam succumbed to damage. Always exploring their world and community around them, the students and their science teacher saw this as a perfect opportunity for learning.
