Alyssa Picknelly of Springfield got a chance to hold a rat, just like the ones she read about from NIHM!

The Grammar School at Somersville has had a long tradition of teaching its students with the philosophy of educating the whole child. Very often, this is demonstrated by bringing literature to life through art, imaginative writing and fun.

As part of their summer reading assignment, the sixth graders at The Grammar School at Somersville were asked to read "Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of NIHM" by Robert C. O'Brien. The story is about a widowed field mouse, Mrs. Frisby, who asks the rats of NIMH to help move her family's home from the path of the farmer's plow. The rats former imprisonment in a laboratory made them wise and long lived. Since returning to school this fall, The Grammar School sixth graders have spent time creating writing pieces and works of art based on their reading of this classic Newbury Award winning tale.

As a way to further explore the story, the students celebrated their summer reading accomplishments by hosting a Rat Party! They created mouse and rat face masks, "nutty" treats and had a few live rats and rodents visit the class for the day thus creating a memory of this literary treasure that will last a lifetime!
