‘Unfolding Terrain’ on display at Loft Parlor

Date: 3/13/2014

EASTHAMPTON – “Unfolding Terrain: New Paintings by Kathryn Fanelli” is on display through April 4 at The Loft Parlor, 180 Pleasant St.

“Unfolding Terrain” is a new series of large-scale paintings on Tyvek by Fanelli. Fanelli examines concepts of consciousness, unconscious perception, and notions of emptiness via a mindfulness based meditative practice.

The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There was an artist’s reception during Easthampton’s Second Saturday Art Walk on March 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. Featured during the reception was be live Harp music.

Fanelli said of her process: “For the past few years my studio functions both as a meditation space and an art studio. I start the day in formal seated meditation and move into the visual work, it’s an extension of my formal practice. I choose to produce work that does not require traditional tools. Navigating without known direct ego imposed mark making, I utilize the elusive nature of water with pigments to excavate the mind. I am interested in exploring this intimacy of mind, the sensory experience of creativity and the elemental.

“Attention to the conditions with which the work is formed and keeping ego consciousness to a minimum is essential to my work. It is infinitely interesting to work within this construct,” she continued.

Fanelli received her BFA from Montserrat College of Art.

Fanelli has participated in numerous exhibitions in Boston where her studio was previously located as well as New York City and locally.

Fanelli publishes her work widely in Buddhist publications, medical journals and texts, as well as participating in residencies and the recipient of a Professional Development Grant by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
