Walter S. Barr scholarship applications now available

SPRINGFIELD -- The Horace Smith Fund has scholarship money available for graduates of Hampden County public and private high schools.

The Walter S. Barr Scholarship program, now in its 60th year, offers awards of up to $2,500 to graduating high school seniors as well as to students who are currently attending college. These awards are renewable each year until graduation.

Candidates are expected to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) of the College Examination Board. They may submit any other examination scores in support of their applications. Completed applications must be received in the Horace Smith Fund office at 1441 Main St., Springfield, no later than Jan. 10, 2011.

The Barr Scholarship Committee will make awards based on school record, recommendations and examination results with consideration to the applicants' needs.

Fellowship awards, designed to assist full-time graduate students, are not less than $4,000 each and may be renewed annually for up to two additional years.

Applicants must be residents of Hampden County. Completed applications must be received in the Fund office by Feb. 1, 2011.

Candidates are expected to take the Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examinations.
