Wistariahurst announces March lineup of events

HOLYOKE — The following events will take place throughout the month of March at Wistariahurst Museum, 238 Cabot St.
  • March Gallery Exhibition — "VISUAL" (Ventures in Science Using Art Laboratory) .

  • March 5 at 6 p.m. — Historical Lecture Series: Finding a Place of Origin for Your Irish Ancestor.

    Anyone who has an Irish ancestor in their family tree is usually eager to find out just where in Ireland they came from. This can be a very difficult task for researchers, especially those of the famine era (1840s to 1860s).

    Lisa Dougherty's presentation will focus on sources to use here in the United States to help identify a place of origin for your Irish ancestor, and hopefully help further your research in Ireland.

    Suggested donation is $5.

  • March 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. — Pisanki Workshop

    Carol Kostecki will lead a hands-on demonstration of making pisanki in the art of dying eggs for a traditional Easter holiday. Appropriate for adults and children 12 and older.

    Classes are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 6 p.m. Reservations are required. The cost is $35 per person.

  • March 12 at 6 p.m. — Dennis Picard presents "Helen Storrow."

    Helen Storrow became acquainted with the Pioneer Valley early in her life and returned in the 1920s to head the "Home Department" at the Eastern States Exposition. Her legacy is seen in the "New England Village" she created on the Exposition's grounds renamed in her honor.

    Storrowton Village curator and historian Dennis Picard will speak about the life and times of this amazing woman and her social and charitable projects.

    Suggested donation is $5.

  • March 14 at 6:30 p.m. — Gardening at Wistariahurst: An Introduction.

    Information regarding the Wistariahurst Garden Restoration will be provided as well as a chance to sign up to volunteer for garden workdays. This program is presented by Wistariahurst Museum Gardeners and Western Massachusetts Master Gardeners.

  • March 17 and 18 — The museum will be closed these dates for the St. Patrick's Day celebration in Holyoke.

  • March 19 at 6 p.m. — Remarkable Women Series: Women's Work: Mary Pynchon to Rosie the Riveter.

    Fran Gagnon will tell the stories of area women and their varied roles in shaping Western Massachusetts in a lecture at Wistariahurst. From Mary Pynchon Holyoke, daughter of Springfield's founder in 1636 to the celebrated "Rosie" or World War II fame, the program will offer a sampling of a few of our area's leading lights through more than three centuries. Suggested donation $5.

  • March 23 from 7 to 11 p.m. — Tango at Wistariahurst

    The illustrious tango dance halls of Golden Age Buenos Aires come to life at Wistariahurst. This evening immersion into this captivating social dance will begin with an introductory tango lesson, taught by local instructor, Veronika Kruta.

    Following the lesson, the floor will be open to dancers of all levels, with a break for our world-renowned guest performers, Nick Jones and Diana Cruz. Age (1930s and 40s) costume or elegant attire is encouraged.
Reservations are required. Tickets are $30 for entire evening, $20 for dancing and performance only and $12 for lesson only.
