WMECO provides funding for mini grants

For the past eight years WMECO has provided funding to Springfield School Volunteers for a math and science mini grant program for Springfield Public School teachers. Thanks to WMECO's generosity, fifteen math and science teachers were recently awarded grants of up to $300 to fund math and science projects in their schools.

"The math and science teachers are extremely enthusiastic about the opportunity to increase the resources used in the schools and classrooms," Dr. Linda Abbott, Director of Math, Springfield Public Schools, said.

Western Massachusetts Electric Company has made a commitment to support this program, which allows teachers to undertake projects they would otherwise not be able to do. A committee made up of representatives from SPS, SSV and WMECO reviews the proposals submitted by the teachers and select the winners. "Each year we are amazed by the creativity of the projects that are submitted and the impact they have on learning for just $300. We are grateful to WMECO for allowing us to provide these opportunities to the teachers and students of the Springfield Public Schools, " Denise Cogman, executive officer, Springfield School Volunteers, said.
