Yom HaShoah committee seeks Holocaust rescue stories

SPRINGFIELD — Do you have a rescue story from the Holocaust? The Yom HaShoah committee is looking for local stories of rescue to share at the annual Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remem-brance Day) commemoration, which will be on April 18 at Congregation B'nai Torah, 2 Eunice Drive Longmeadow, at 7 p.m.

Stories can be first hand accounts told by rescuers; eye witnesses, family or friends of rescuers; or those rescued.

These stories will be added to the Local Survivor exhibit in the Jewish Community Center (JCC) lobby and will become part of a memory book of survivor and liberator stories.

Congress established the Days of Remembrance in the United States more than 60 years ago. These days are also commemorated in Israel and all over the world.

Yom HaShoah is observed as a day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jewish people and five million others who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its accessories and for the Jewish resistance in that period.

The theme designated by the Unites States Holocaust Memorial Museum for the 2012 observance is "Choosing to Act: Stories of Rescue."

Those with stories they'd like to share may contact Jeff Rembrandt at the JCC at 739-4715 or jrembrandt@jcca.org.
