Baystate announces array of upcoming medical events
SPRINGFIELD Baystate Medical Center has made the following annoucements of up-coming events.

The latest advances in neck pain treatment will be the focus of a free discussion, "A Pain in the Neck," led by Dr. Sherry L. Taylor, chief of Neurosurgery at Baystate Medical Center on May 13.
The informational event, sponsored by Senior Class, will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Baystate Health Education Center on 361 Whitney Ave. in Holyoke.
Taylor will discuss neck pain, a common medical condition which develops from a number or disorders and diseases, its causes, treatment and when to consider surgery.

The Kenneth B. Schwartz Center is currently accepting nominations for its 10th annual Compassionate Caregiver Award honoring caregivers in Massachusetts who display extraordinary compassion in caring for patients.
The award will be accompanied by a $5,000 prize and four finalists will receive $1,000 each. Any paid, employed caregiver or team of caregivers who have direct contact with patients in any Massachusetts health care setting are eligible for the award.
The general public, as well as health care professionals, can submit nominations. The Schwartz Center encourages the nomination of candidates from diverse institutions including long-term care facilities, community health centers, outpatient clinics, hospices, visiting nurse associations and hospitals. Nominations are encouraged that represent the broad racial and ethnic diversity of caregivers throughout Massachusetts.

The award is given each year in honor of Kenneth B. Schwartz, a health care attorney who died in 1995 after battling lung cancer. The award recognizes exemplary caregivers who make exceptional efforts to connect with their patients, listen to their needs, respect their values and culture and impart strength and hope especially in times of crisis.
The mission of the Kenneth B. Schwartz Center, established in 1996 as a non-profit organization, is to advance compassionate health care and strengthen the relationship between patients and caregivers.

Healthy women looking for a different method of birth control, or who may be tired of trying to remember to take the pill every day, may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial of a new contraceptive vaginal ring being held at Baystate Medical Center.
Designed to look at how well the rings prevents pregnancy and whether or not it helps in controlling menstrual cycle bleeding, the clinical trial is being overseen by the hospital's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The trial is open to healthy women ages 18 to 39 with regular menstrual cycles and who weigh less than 209 pounds.
Payment for time and travel will be provided.
