Cancer survivors set ambitious fundraising goal of $20,000Date: 9/12/2014 LUDLOW – An ambitious $20,000 goal was set by Leonor Salvador, Maureen Ender and Robyn Hersey, all cancer survivors, who are hosting the fifth annual Breast Cancer Benefit on Oct. 12 at the Gremio Lusitano Club on Winsor Street.
“I am a six-year survivor,” Salvador said during a recent late afternoon interview with Reminder Publications at Noble Hospital in Westfield.
Salvador credits her physician, Dr. Steven Schonholz, breast surgeon, for her survival. Schonholz serves as director of Noble’s Center for Comprehensive Breast Health.
“Our fundraiser for Noble’s center and its Pink WAY Breast Cancer Survivors’ Group has become so popular we had to move to a new venue,” Salvador, stated noting the space is being donated for the early evening affair.
A sit-down dinner served family style will include chicken marsala, roast beef, shrimp and rice, pasta primavera, roasted potatoes, salad and rolls, cake and ice cream. A cash bar is also available.
Tony Tavares, owner of Villa Rose, is catering the all-you-can-eat affair.
Salvador, with some help from her friends, started the benefit several years ago because of the “great care” she received from Schonholz.
“He saved my life,” she said. “I felt a need to give back to him because he helps women every day.”
Salvador added that the attention Schonholz exhibits to his patients and the support he provides is a perfect reason to conduct the event so that more women can be helped.
“He is an amazing doctor,” she said, adding, “He cares about each patient.”
Salvador noted that for anyone being treated for cancer it is essential to have a positive attitude and having a physician who is supportive can make a big difference in one’s outcome.
“Your body can heal better if you have a positive attitude and support system,” she said.
In addition to treating patients, Salvador noted that Schonholz also supports all of the endeavors throughout the year that Salvador and her friends conduct to raise funds for Noble’s center and The Pink WAY. The group meets the third Tuesday of every month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in conference room B at Noble.
The dinner is a “celebration of life and the good work” being done to save lives, says Salvador.
Crooner Rick Guzzo will perform during the event, accompanied by DJ Max Salvador.
“Both men donate their time to this event,” she said.
In addition to dinner, a candy bar station, raffles, vendors, and a spinning wheel to win a prize are all highlights of the fundraiser. Each attendee will also be treated to Pink Way cupcakes being developed by Chmura’s Bakery.
“The cupcakes will be made from a strawberry batter, topped with pink frosting and a pink ribbon will grace the top,” said Salvador.
“We are grateful for Leonor and her friends for their time since this is our biggest fundraiser,” said Schonholz, adding that the money raised goes toward helping patients in a myriad of ways.
Doors open at 4 p.m. and the dinner will be served at 5:15 p.m. Throughout the evening, Salvador and her team will be announcing winners of raffles and encouraging everyone to get up and dance and enjoy life.
“Our vendors will also have products that make you feel good and 20 percent of each vendor’s sales will go to The Pink WAY,” said Salvador.
The highlight of the evening will be announcing the winner of a guitar autographed by pop superstar Katy Perry. Tickets are $10 each.
“The guitar comes with a letter of authenticity from Mohegan Sun,” said Salvador, who noted that Perry played at the venue July 7 and was gracious when she was asked to sign it for the fundraiser.
Tickets are $25 for adults and free for ages 12 and under when accompanied by an adult. For tickets and more information, contact Salvador at 583-8945 or lsalva2151@aol.com.
