Lustman to keynote Cancer Survivors' DayDate: 3/12/2012 March 12, 2012
SPRINGFIELD — Singer, songwriter, record producer, and cancer survivor Charlie Lustman will serve as keynote speaker at the 15th annual Rays of Hope Breast Cancer Survivors' Day on March 31.
The annual event, sponsored by the Comprehensive Breast Center at Baystate Medical Center and Rays of Hope, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MassMutual Center.
Lustman — who composed the first-ever pop music album about the cancer experience — will use songs from his album, "Made Me Nuclear," as a way of sharing his experiences with cancer from diagnosis through recovery. Lustman has said his song writing helped him to process the situation and that he, "had a bigger reason for being allowed to stay on the planet a little longer."
Lustman, who attended Boston's Berklee College of Music, has produced music for commercials and has recorded three albums. Every Sunday during the summer of 2008, Lustman performed for cancer patients at City Of Hope cancer center in California before taking his musical talents to Santa Monica Playhouse, where he performed from September 2008 to August 2009. Since then, Lustman has been touring the country and taking his "musical HOPE campaign" to empower those in similar situations.
In addition to Lustman's performance, participants will be able to select two workshops on a number of topics, including "Gently Flowing Yoga," "Breast Cancer Update — New Drugs, New Treatments and New Strategies," "Beautiful Beadwork!," "Some Nerve," "Strengthening and Exercise," "Are You NuVal Savvy," "Cutaneous Aspects of Breast Cancer," "Laughter is the Best Medicine," "Gynecological Issues for the Maturing Woman with a History of Breast Cancer," and "Beads."
Special "Strengthening and Exercise" and "Beads" workshops will also be offered in Spanish.
There will also be networking opportunities throughout the day and the chance to visit with several exhibitors who will sell a variety of breast-related products.
A continental breakfast and buffet luncheon will be served.
The cost to register is $25 per person with the remaining cost underwritten by Rays of Hope. Parking will be validated only for the Civic Center Parking Garage.
