Meals on Wheels delivers greeting cards to homebound seniorsDate: 4/17/2012 April 16, 2012
GREATER SPRINGFIELD — Since 2000, Meals on Wheels programs from across the United States have joined together during the month of March to raise awareness about nutrition programs for older adults. This year, Greater Springfield Senior Services Inc. (GSSSI) joined forces with the Western Massachusetts Correctional Alcohol Center to honor the hundreds of seniors who receive meals on wheels.
The women of Unit 5 at the center designed colorful greeting cards and wrote upbeat messages, noting appreciation of them and all they have contributed to the country in their lifetime. Della Blake, assistant deputy superintendent of the Western Massachusetts Correctional Alcohol Center, said the women were enthusiastic and embraced the project wholeheartedly.
GSSSI home delivered meals coordinator, Tracy A. Landry, Springfield, arranged for the drivers to distribute the cards to local homebound seniors. The drivers reported that the cards were a welcome surprise.
Landry noted, "It was nice that this group of women recognized the accomplishments of these 'unsung heroines.' This simple act of kindness put smiles on a lot of faces today."
