New HealthSouth officially opensDate: 12/18/2013 LUDLOW – The new HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Western Massachusetts, the most modern facility of its kind in New England, has officially opened.
Located at 222 State St., site of the Ludlow redevelopment project, the hospital will accommodate the 53 patient beds currently operational at 14 Chestnut Place, Ludlow.
As an acute rehabilitation hospital, HealthSouth provides comprehensive rehabilitation for people with a variety of diagnoses, including stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and orthopedic injuries, as well as neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.
With its patient-centered environment, the 74,000 square foot hospital includes all private rooms with in-suite showers, modern therapeutic gymnasiums, and advanced rehabilitative technologies. Its interior courtyard is also designed to provide everyday therapeutic opportunities for patients.
“I am thrilled that patients who choose to receive a higher level of rehabilitative care will be able to work with disease-specific trained professionals using the latest technologies in a state of the art hospital right here in Western Mass.,” Victoria Healy, HealthSouth’s CEO, said.
Built on the site of the former Ludlow Mills, the new hospital was designed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification standards. The exterior façade incorporates 100,000 salvaged bricks from the historic Ludlow Mills stock houses. The tall, light-filled lobby, clad with the original brick and wood beams, mimics the character of the industrial stock houses, and solar roof panels create 60kw of onsite renewable energy.
The majority of the hospital’s construction, which began last September, was done by local construction contractors. The general contractor was Robins & Morton of Birmingham, Ala., where HealthSouth’s corporate offices are located. The building was designed by the architectural firm of Gresham Smith and Partners.
HealthSouth is the nation’s largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in terms of patients treated and discharged, revenues and number of hospitals. Operating in 28 states across the country and in Puerto Rico, HealthSouth serves patients through its network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, outpatient rehabilitation satellite clinics and home health agencies.
HealthSouth’s hospitals provide a higher level of rehabilitative care to patients who are recovering from conditions such as stroke and other neurological disorders, cardiac and pulmonary conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, complex orthopedic conditions, and amputations.
