Pediatric Diabetes
to be focus of Baystate children's hospital health fair
SPRINGFIELD Baystate Children's Hospital will hold its 7th Annual Pediatric Diabetes Health Fair on Nov. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at the Baystate Health Education Center located on 361 Whitney Avenue in Holyoke, as part of American Diabetes Month.
During the free evening health fair, there will be presentations by Dr. Beth Jenkins of Baystate Pediatric Endocrinology on "Hypoglycemia: How Low Can You go?", a program for kids called "Snack Art" by registered dietitian Lynn Henry, R.D., and a talk on "Having a Life with Diabetes" presented by the Teen Support Group.
Parents and children will also have the opportunity to visit a number of informational booths where they will learn about the latest in diabetes equipment and supplies, to meet other families living with diabetes, and to ask staff questions.
In addition to children and their families, the event is also open to teachers, daycare providers and other caregivers.
Diabetes is a serious disease that affects the body's ability to produce or respond properly to insulin, a hormone that allows blood glucose (sugar) to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. Nearly 21 million children and adults in the U.S. have diabetes. It is the fifth deadliest disease in the U.S. and it has no cure. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, some 6.2 million people are unaware they have the disease.
