Preparing for nursing offered at STCC
Springfield Technical Community College will be hosting information sessions this fall for anyone interested in applying to the highly-regarded RN Nursing program.
Louisa Davis-Freeman, Dean of Admissions, said, "Due to the high volume of applications to this program, and the interest in information about gaining admission to the program, we are holding information sessions to assist our students. Anyone interested in nursing is strongly advised to attend one of these sessions. The sessions are for everyone: first-time college students, transfer students, as well as current STCC students in other majors who wish to change their major to nursing."
The sessions will take place in the Student Success Center in Building 27 on Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11. All sessions will begin at 12:15 p.m. Davis-Freeman said, "There is no need to sign up in advance just show up at whichever session is most convenient for you."
Some students have selected the General Studies Pre-Health program at STCC to prepare them with the prerequisite courses needed to apply to the nursing program. For instance, two of the students who recently graduated from that program and who will be going on to pursue education in nursing are Jamilette Torres and Migdalia Pinto, both of Springfield.
Torres said, "If it wasn't for my mother pushing me, I probably wouldn't have gone to college." She'd been told by a high school counselor that even with a 3.9 GPA, she wouldn't make it at college. But Torres' mother is an STCC nursing graduate, a head nurse at Baystate, and she knew better. Torres has now graduated from the General Studies program, and will be going on to AIC's nursing program next year. She's been working full-time while going to school and caring for her daughter. Her advice is "Never give up." Torres' young daughter will undoubtedly one day be following in her mother's footsteps in higher education.
Pinto's two young children will surely also follow in her educational footsteps. Before graduating from General Studies Pre-Health at STCC, she was already a medical assistant, and wanted to do more. She has been accepted into the STCC nursing program, to begin this fall.
Born in New Jersey, she graduated from Springfield's High School of Commerce. Pinto said her motivation for a health career was to help her father, who is battling diabetes. Her compassion will spread that devotion to many more patients in our region. Pinto talked about the "awesome faculty" at STCC: "If it weren't for some of them, I might not have made it." She would like to come back to the college as a professor someday.
Other health programs offered at STCC include associate degree programs in Clinical Laboratory Science, Dental Hygiene, Nuclear Medicine, Radiography, Sonography, Massage Therapy, Medical Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, Respiratory Care and Surgical Technology. Certificate or certificate of completion programs include Clinical Laboratory Assistant, Cosmetology, Dental Assistant, Massage Therapy for Licensed Healthcare Professionals, Medical Assistant and Medical Coding and Billing Specialist.
