LONGMEADOW -- Each year for more than 20 years, the Longmeadow Democratic Town Committee (LDTC) has hosted a breakfast celebration to honor both local and statewide Democratic figures for the work they do. This year, they'll be honoring someone who has served all of Hampden County for nearly two decades.

The 2010 Democrat of the Year is District Attorney William Bennett, who has served in that capacity since January 1991.

"We really thought the District Attorney had done an outstanding job," Candy Glazer, chair of the LDTC, said. "We didn't know at the time we selected him that he would be retiring. He was very humble and modest when we told him he'd been chosen; he's delivered distinguished service over his entire career."

Bennett, currently a Longmeadow resident, was described by Glazer as well-respected and well-liked.

"We wanted to put a spotlight on him," she said. "It's beyond time to honor District Attorney Bennett." Glazer added that the decision to name him Democrat of the Year was a unanimous one amongst the committee.

In addition to Bennett, four members of the town's School Committee -- Mary Vogel, Christine Swanson, Gwen Bruns and John Fitzgerald -- will be honored at the event. All four are also officers of the LDTC.

"They put in the extra time and effort when it comes to the issues of a new high school and a balanced budget," Glazer said of the quartet. "We're glad to have them on both committees and we want to thank them publicly for all their efforts. We are so proud of them."

The keynote speaker for the Democrat of the Year Award Presentation Breakfast will be the Commonwealth's Secretary of State, the Hon. William Galvin.

"The event adds some panache and glamour to the local political scene," Glazer told Reminder Publications. The LDTC has invited Gov. Deval Patrick and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray, among other well-known persons in the party, to attend the event as well.

The breakfast, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on April 11, will be taking place at Twin Hills Country Club. Tickets are available until April 3. For more information on the event, call Candy Glazer at 567-9303, e-mail longmeadowdemocrats@gmail.com or visit www.longmeadowdemocrats.com.

Funds raised by the event help support Democratic candidates both locally and statewide and this year, Glazer said, the LDTC hopes to use some of the proceeds to donate books to Storrs Library to encourage interest in history, political science and government.
