Assessors recommend maintaining single tax rate

LONGMEADOW The Board of Assessors recently submitted their recommendation to the Select Board regarding allocation of the tax levy for 2006.

The Board of Assessors recommended that a factor of 1 be adopted for FY06. This would set a single tax rate, for all classes of property in town, of approximately $15.27.

In their report the Assessors concluded that, "in fiscal 2006 just over 96 percent of the property value is in the residential class and just under four percent is in the remaining three classes of industrial, commercial and personal property. It is primarily because of the small amount of value in the commercial, industrial and personal property accounts, the Assessors are recommending a single tax rate."

"In addition to the small amount of value in the CIP (commercial, industrial and personal) class, there are only 97 accounts (29 commercial, 7 industrial and 61 personal property accounts compared to 5,687 residential accounts, that is 1.677 percent compared to 98.323 percent)," the report continued. "Reducing the rate of the many by up to 32 cents while burdening a few by up to $7.64 does not strike the Assessors as a fair approach to generating revenue."

While there were discussions that took place on the topic as a part of a Tax Classification Hearing at the Nov. 21 Select Board meeting, Town Manager Robin Crosbie said the hearing will continue Dec. 5 where it will also end with an official vote by the Select Board.
