French horns featured at upcoming Chamber Music Society concert
Date: 1/22/2010
Jan. 22, 2010 LONGMEADOW - The Longmeadow Chamber Music Society will present a winter, family concert Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. at First Church of Christ in Longmeadow. The concert will feature a French horn quartet, which will provide an entertaining and educational demonstration of the history of the French horn, from the forest to the concert hall. The music of four horns is performed not just on modern instruments, but on instruments from the beginning of the brass family, such as the ram's horn, hunting horns, and even a garden hose!
The performers, Jean Jeffries, Rebecca Krause-Hardie, Christine Mortensen, and Longmeadow resident, Margot Rowland, are all well-known professional musicians and educators in the Pioneer Valley. They have been performing together since 2005, and have had extensive performance experience. They all enjoy interacting with an audience in sharing their love of music and the beautiful sounds of the horn.
The program will include music by Lowell Shaw, Alec Wilder, Paul Hindemith, G. Rossini, and John Harbison. From motets to jazz, the quartet covers the spectrum of musical genres.
The concert will last about one and one-half hours, followed by a reception. Donations of $15 at the door are accepted from non-members.
