International chess master visits Longmeadow

LONGMEADOW On Oct. 14, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Storrs Library in Longmeadow will host a chess program led by international chess master Josef Vatnikov.

Vatnikov, former coach of the Moscow University Chess Club, has written an unusual book, "Essay on Chess." Unlike other chess books, Vatnikov's work does not focus solely on professional chess players and chess moves. Instead, the book contains several interesting stories about amateur players and many unique photographs from Vatnikov's personal collection.

During the first 30 minutes of the program, the public will have the opportunity to meet several accomplished members of the audience who are the protagonists of several of Vatnikov's stories. They will speak briefly of their experiences as amateur chess players. Following that, Vatnikov and his former student, FIDE master Steven Winer of Melrose will engage a maximum of 20 opponents in 90 minutes of alternative simultaneous play. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Call the Reference Desk at the Storrs Library, 565-4181. Play is limited to the first 20 members of the audience who sign up. Prior to the event, there will be a book signing at 12:30 p.m.

For more information call Storrs Library at 565-4181. Chess players should bring their own chess sets.
