Memorial golf tournament benefits school

LONGMEADOW The third annual Monsignor F. Thomas Devine Golf Classic has been scheduled for Sept. 27 at Hampden Country Club in Hampden. The day promises to be one of fantastic golf, enjoyable contests and plentiful refreshments. Monsignor Devine was a parish priest, published author, college professor at Elms College, college president at Elms College from 1965 1976 and official expert on Vatican II. He had a passion for comforting the sick and those in pain. Monsignor died on Oct. 10, 2001 at the age of 82.

He was pastor of St. Mary's Church in Longmeadow until September 2001, a post he had held for 21 years.

The tournament will benefit St. Mary School in Longmeadow which Monsignor held close to his heart. He was often found outside with the children in the morning and hardly ever missed a performance held at the school by its students. He often praised their work from the pulpit.

Registration at the tournament will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12 p.m Lunch, dinner and awards are included in the tournament price of $125 for an individual, or $475 for a foursome. The cost for dinner alone will be $35.
