New series to address poverty, climate change, hunger, and economic development

On four Monday evenings during Lent, speakers at St. Andrew's Church will offer perspectives on the local, national and global challenges which are addressed by the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals in a series titled "What in the World are We Doing?"

Agreed to in 2000 by 189 world leaders, the Millennium Development Goals target the extreme poverty in which more than one billion people live. Eight specific goals address the disease, homelessness, conflict, environmental degradation, hunger, and lack of access to education which are both causes and effects of human poverty. In the U.S., the Episcopal Church has adopted the MDGs as a mission priority.

The series at St. Andrew's will begin on Feb. 26, with Climate in Crisis: An Inconvenient Truth. This acclaimed documentary focuses on the realities and consequences of global climate change. The Rev. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas, Priest Associate at Grace Church in Amherst, will introduce the film and answer questions afterward. She is actively engaged in environmental ministry, and is currently organizing the Interfaith Walk for Climate Rescue, a pilgrimage from Northampton to Boston which will take place from March 16 to 24. For more information and to register, visit www.climatewalk.org.

Future programs in the series include: on March 5, The Power of One Malian Midwife with Kris Holloway; on March 12, Fresh Approaches to Homelessness in Springfield with Geraldine McCafferty; and, on March 19, Economic Development as a Tool for Justice with Dianne and Paul Doherty. All programs begin at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, located at 335 Longmeadow Street in Longmeadow. Call 567-5901 for more information. All are welcome.
