| By Natasha Clark Assistant Managing Editor LONGMEADOW Like many other school districts in the Commonwealth, the School Committee is staying on top of health matters concerning H1N1, better known as Swine Flu. Superintendent E. Jahn Hart said that the district is keeping abreast of all newly released information and in order to keep parents informed, the district's Web site has now offers up-to-date information. "We participated in a conference call from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. [Sept. 9] with the DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) and DPH (Department of Public Health) to discuss plans for immunizations for both seasonal and H1N1. Joining us was our Board of Health director, our assistant superintendent, our pupil services director and four of our school nurses," Hart said. School Committee Meeting The Longmeadow School Committee also met this week. One of the things reviewed at the special meeting was a list of capital projects to be submitted to the town manager for fiscal year 2011. There are about nine specific technology projects, 11 pertaining to Williams Middle School (WMS), eight to Glenbrook Middle School (GB), five to Center School (CTR), three for Blueberry Hill Elementary School (BBH), 11 concerning Longmeadow High School (LHS) and three that span the district. However, the Capital Planning Committee prioritized 14 specific projects. The list states, "All projects were ranked by the Capital Planning Committee on three criteria: seriousness, urgency and growth." These criteria are defined as Seriousness: What is the impact of the funded item on the department's ability to carry out its core mission? Have alternatives been considered and eliminated? Urgency: How soon must this need be met? Are there adverse or potentially serious consequences of delay? Growth: Will the monetary need grow at a rate greater than inflation if the purchase is not made this planning cycle? Put another way, does pending a dollar now prevent the spending of far more than that next year?" Those projects listed in terms of priority and funding requests are: teacher computer replacement, up to $250,000 and student computer replacement, funding request to be determined; WMS gym floor replacement, $95,000; student locker replacement at GB, estimated at $75,000; student locker replacement at WMS, also estimated at $75,000; WMS gym bleachers replacement, $70,000; CTR Phase III-10year exterior refurbishment, $160,000; GB concrete steps replacement, $38,000; district security system Phase III, $85,000; CTR replacement of exterior doors, $45,000 estimate; WMS Phase II window replacement, $86,000; wireless network extension, $10,000 -- $60,000; CTR air conditioning, $325,000 -- $400,000; and BBH access road installation, $30,000 estimated.
