LONGMEADOW Nearly two years after being chosen as Superintendent of Longmeadow Public Schools, Dr. Scott AndersEn has resigned from the position.

Citing family as his reason for relocating to South Carolina, AndersEn will become the new Superintendent of School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties in South Carolina.

AndersEn said in statement released to the press, "This proximity will provide our children with a significant bond to their grandparents and will provide my wife and me with much needed family support."

AndersEn and his wife Bernice are the parents of seven children, including twins, and his wife is pregnant with their eighth child, due this summer.

AndersEn was selected for the South Carolina position from three candidates who were called to second round interviews, after a nationwide search. AndersEn beat out Dr. Kenneth Dinkins and Dr. Dwight Hedge, two superintendents who have been involved in school systems since the late 1960s, for the position. He will replace interim superintendent Dr. TEC Dowling.

The Longmeadow School Committee will soon begin the process of finding AndersEn's replacement. His resignation is effective June 30.

"Dr. AndersEn did a good job while he was here," School Committee Chair Jim Nittoli told Reminder Publications. "He just wasn't here that long."

AndersEn, once a resident of Venezuela, began his career in education as a substitute for a fifth grade bilingual Spanish-English class in Texas.

AndersEn explained that, when he went in the classroom for the first time, "I knew that day" [that he wanted to be an educator].

AndersEn succeeded Longmeadow Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas McGarry, who held the position for 17 years.

When AndersEn signed on as Longmeadow's superintendent in July 2004, the School Committee, for the purpose of transitioning to a new superintendent, ordered a review of the school department's financial and administrative practices and procedures for fiscal years 2003 and 2004. This was conducted by the Abrahams Group.

The report revealed several inconsistencies in practices and procedures in all they reported 17 findings.

AndersEn has been a part of the School Committee's effort to reshape the fiscal practices of the school district into sound procedures.

When asked about his accomplishments in the district AndersEn said it would be "fallacious" to give one person credit.

"Everything about education is a community effort and it's not just one person," AndersEn added.

According to news reports on www.wltx.com, AndersEn has signed a three-year contract with an annual salary of $155,000.
