SPRINGFIELD -- State Rep. Brian Ashe, D-Longmeadow, hosted a re-election campaign kick off at Coconut's Bar and Grill on Dickinson Street on May 24. The event was well attended by supporters of the state representative, who will be completing his first term this winter.

"This started nine years ago when I first ran for Select Board," Ashe told those in attendance. "I came into office with the state facing a $4 billion deficit but we're moving forward. I promise to continue to work hard for you."

Ashe told Reminder Publications his goal for the rest of his first term is to get through the budget process for fiscal year 2011. Once that's done, he wants to start working with community leaders to prioritize projects they would like to see completed -- in Longmeadow, for example, the high school project.

He added that communities also need to look more into regionalizing services.

"I want to continue with reform as well," he stated. "We've already successfully tackled transportation, ethics and pension reform. We need to look at the full budget once it's done for other areas we can reform. I'd like to see the criminal justice system reformed, along with employment, welfare and Social Security."

When asked about the belief that the recession is over in Massachusetts, Ashe said, "I don't know if the recession is over but we're definitely moving in the right direction."
