Vintage Base Ball scheduled for next week

Date: 8/18/2009

LONGMEADOW The Meddowe Vintage Base Ball Club has two upcoming vintage base ball games here in town, offering up the rules, equipment, uniforms and sportsmanship of the game as it was played in the 1800s.

On Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. the Meddowe BBC will return to action hosting the Waterbury Connors at Turner Park in Longmeadow on a special "all-grass" field in our own little Field of Dreams. The Waterbury Connors host a four-team tournament in early April each year where the Meddowe Nine always show well but often finish second to the host club. At Turner Park the fine ballists from Meddowe including Big Country, General, Bugsy, Cappy, Yardstick, Double-Barrel, Okey, Omahhh, Greenie, Doc and a host of characters will try to inaugurate Turner Park with a victory in a best of three match of 1860s baseball. In this era the hurlers toss underhand, balls played on one-hop are "hands" (outs) and no gloves are allowed! An exciting, fast-moving game will see many spectacular plays, base-running blunders, hidden-ball tricks and a few other surprises to be sure!

Come on out and support the Meddowe Vintage Base Ball Club as they play base ball the way it was meant to be played.
