DPW encourages residents to keep recycling

SOUTH HADLEY On Aug.16 Gregory Kereakoglow, DPW Superintendent, announced that the South Hadley Recycling program has received the annual payment for recycling. The check, for $27,388.55, is made up of a payment for each ton of materials delivered to the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) as well as additional revenue sharing which occurs when recycling markets are above a certain level.

"We are very happy with the recycling being done by our residents," Kereakoglow said. "Not only do we have money on landfill fees, but we make money on the recyclable. Every year since the program has begun, we have recycled more and more. The better we do, the more money we can bring into South Hadley."

All proceeds from recycling are placed in the town's Solid Waste Enterprise Fund, which pays for the town's solid waste program. Kereakoglow noted that the more money coming into the fund from recycling and from landfill host fees, the less the the townspeople have to pay in solid waste fees.

"People should understand that the more they recycle, the better it is for both the town and the environment. We have a terrific contract with the MRF for the next 10 years, in which we are paid over $15 for each ton we recycle. Not only does recycling save energy, natural resources, and money, as I said before, it also brings in money. It's a terrific deal."
