SOUTH HADLEY - Barbara L. Eckman, chair of the South Hadley Select board announced she will not seek a fourth term, at the Feb. 6 meeting of the Select Board.

Eckman, has been on the town Select Board for the past nine years and for 10 years prior was on the town's Appropriations Committee. Beyond the community government of South Hadley, Eckman has served as executive director for Commerce and assistant vice president of Fleet Bank for 31 years, before retiring from her position in 2001.

A grandmother, Eckman stated that she feels it is time to move on. She also announced she will support the candidacy of Mike Herrik to replace her as chair in this April's town elections.

"Mike is not a single-issue candidate, nor does he have an ax to grind," said Eckman in explaining her endorsement of Herrik.
