South Hadley receives $23 K of recycling money

Residents of South Hadley learned recently that all their efforts keeping paper and cans and bottles separated from the trash really does pay off, both environmentally and economically. On March 8, Jane Southworth, South Hadley's Solid Waste Coordinator, received a check from Waste Management, operators of the Springfield Materials Recycling Facility (MF) for $23,460.05. The first payment of $21,614 was received in June, 2006.

In a comparison with other communities, South Hadley recycled more per capita and received more money than several other communities of equal or larger size. However, the Pay as you Throw program has had a big impact with some smaller communities that have PayT systems recycling measurably more than South Hadley.

"I'm really proud of the residents of South Hadley," said Southworth, "but we can do better. Recycling is easy, makes money for the community and saves resources, and it's mandatory, so everyone should be doing it." Anyone with questions about recycling is urged to call Jane Southworth at 538-5033.
