A SANDWICH HERO

Date: 3/3/2008

WNEC student attempts to eat the world's largest corned beef sandwich

Sam Lynes, a student of the WNEC School of Law, was the first-ever contestant to try to down the world's largest corned beef sandwich at Gus & Paul's on Sumner Avenue. The 6.5-pound sandwich was 10 times the size of a regular sandwich, according to store owner Gordie Weissman.

If he had finished, he would've had a sandwich named after him at Gus & Paul's and $100 would've been donated by the owner to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. Because he didn't finish, however, Lynes had to pay for the $60 meal, which Weissman pledged to donate to the Food Bank.

Weissman thinks he'll be seeing more people attempting to beat the challenge now. "It's tough, though," he said.
