SPRINGFIELD Six cooking teams will participate in the ninth annual Brothers That Cook fund-raiser slated Sept. 17 at the High School of Science and Technology.

From vice presidents of area corporations, police officers and attorneys to personal trainers, pastors and chefs, all participants are donating their time and culinary talents to benefit the community service programs of the Springfield Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta (DST) Sorority Inc., according to Brenda Harvey, chairperson of this year's event.

The local chapter is affiliated with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., which was founded by 22 undergraduate women in 1913 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., according to Harvey.

"These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and assist persons in need," said Harvey. "DST is a private, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs to promote human welfare."

Locally, DST sponsors the annual Delta Scholarship and Delta Academy. The purpose of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is to develop the skills and talents of girls (ages 10 to 14) in the spirit of the Sorority's basic principles. Also, each year scholarships are awarded to college-bound students to defray the cost of books, tuition and incidentals. The 2005 scholarship recipients are Kelly Smith of Central High School; Roshima Williams of Holyoke High School, and Ashley Akubuiro of Minnechaug Regional High School.

The Brothers That Cook fundraiser allows the local chapter to promote positive African American men in the community, as well as raise public awareness to the needs of the region, added Harvey.

A new feature of the fundraiser is the partnership between DST and the Greater Springfield Chapter of the American Heart Association. Heart Association volunteers will provide information on how to set goals for a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Also, DST will provide a Voter Registration Application and Education Booth at the fundraiser.

"Our goal is to increase the number of individuals in our community to register and vote for the upcoming election," said Harvey.

Brothers That Cook participants include Andrew Cade, Jerome Irving and Brian Baker representing the American Heart Association; Chuckie Jacobs, Christopher White and Omar Zachery, representing B.C. Enterprise, and Nadir Khalid and Abdul-S-Salaam Khalid, representing Khalid & Son. Cooks also include Bud Williams and Frederick "Rick" Hurst on the Point of View team, and Michael Addison, Ron Copes, John Johnson III, Rufus J. Kynard, Lester McDonald, Charlie Youmans, Antonio Polk, Gregory Calloway and Scott Jenkins on "The In-Laws" team. Lastly, representing Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. are Howard-John Wesley, Tim Sneed, Van Johnson, Henry Haste, Tim Jones, Leandrew Young and Martin Derrick.

Harvey would not divulge the culinary samples that visitors will savor that is left as a surprise.

Brothers That Cook is slated from noon to 2 p.m. at the school, 1250 State St. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 10 and younger.

Committee members organizing the fundraiser also include DST Chapter President Willette Johnson, Tonya Johnson, Lisa Johnson and Salandra Johnson.
