Embark on a journey of discovery: The city is alive with wine tastings

WGBY

SPRINGFIELD - More than 400 wines from vineyards all over the world can be sampled during WGBY's 22nd annual Evening of Wine Tasting, the largest wine tasting in western New England. The event, sponsored in part by Table & Vine/Town & Country and The Republican newspaper, will take place at the Springfield Marriott from 5 to 8 pm on March 2.

Some of the area's best restaurants, such as Metro Bis of Simsbury, Conn., as well as specialty food suppliers including Trader Joe's of Hadley, Mass., will be providing delicious hors d'oeuvres, gourmet foods and imported and domestic cheeses during the event.

Wine industry consultants will also be available to pour, answer questions and provide detailed information about each wine. Tickets are $40, $35 for WGBY members. A $5 discount is available for sets of six or more tickets. Price at the door will be $45.

"This event, in addition to being a fund-raiser for western New England's public television station, is a fantastic value for wine lovers. With a per-bottle retail price of between $6 and $90, participants will have access to a slate of wines valued at more than $6,000 for under $50," said noted wine educator and WGBY wine tasting founder Jim Holsing "It's a great opportunity for wine lovers to have fun, learn, make new friends and support public television at the same time."

Holsing also recommends that you do not try wines you know, because "the purpose of a tasting is to find new wines to love." In addition to many examples of all of the most recognized grape varieties, there are also unusual ones available for sampling. A complete program of the event, including wine names, suppliers and table numbers, will be available at the event as well as online at www.wgby.org/wine and planners suggest attendees plan their tasting route ahead of time.

Participants must be 21 years of age. Tickets and information about this and other upcoming wine events, including WGBY's Wine & Dine Auction in April, are available online at www. wgby.org /wine, or by calling 1-800-781-9429, Ext. 1.
