Free barbecue welcomes students back to school

SPRINGFIELD Springfield Public Schools and Sodexo, the School Department's food services company, will host a Back to School Celebration Barbeque on Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at two locations simultaneously: Central High School (1840 Roosevelt Ave.) and Chestnut Middle School (355 Plainfield St.).

The barbeque is free and open to Springfield Public School students and their families. The purpose of the event is to place health and wellness on the minds of students as they get ready to return to school on Aug. 31; and to educate families about community and district resources available to help our children succeed throughout the school year.

At the barbecue, resources related to dental and mental health, defensive hygiene, public safety, tutoring programs and good nutrition will be available. The fun will include music, games, giveaways the first 1,000 students to attend will receive back packs filled with school supplies and, of course, healthy food choices.
