Greek hospitality awaits visitors at Glendi

SPRINGFIELD It is said that the Greeks have a word for it. How about "Philoxenia?" Its translation is Hospitality. That's what awaits you when you attend Glendi 2005.

It takes place at Springfield's St. George Greek Cultural Center on Sept. 10 and 11. The festivities begin each day at 11 a.m.

Whet your appetite for the ever popular souvlakia (shish-kebab) or any of the other signature treats such as gyros, stuffed grape leaves, Greek salad, etc. Your favorite beverages including ouzo will be available. For dessert you will be tempted by loukoumades, baklava, finikia, diples, and many other favorites to be enjoyed there and which are available to take home.

See what treasures you can find at the flea market and at the Greek agora. Not to be missed are the cultural displays as well as tours of the cathedral.

Be sure to visit the cathedral and experience the splendor of the recent restorations to the 135-year-old edifice, especially the stained glass windows.

Relax at the newly restored Manthos Amphitheater and enjoy the performance of typical Greek dances by the young people of the church community.

You can also display your terpsichordian talents as you join others dancing to traditional Greek music playing all day.

Admission is free with the purchase of a $1 raffle ticket.
