SPRINGFIELD Since the tender age of five, Gary Adams has had a passion for growing a variety of gladiolus.

"I still remember the first Grand Champ I won in Upton when I was five," he said during an interview with Reminder Publications. "The variety was Aries."

Adams remembers that time fondly, noting "back then it was tough to win at the shows because we had so many good showmen. I showed against the best ever and held my own."

That passion remains strong more than 50 years later, with Adams now serving as show chairman and superintendent of judges for the Western Massachusetts Gladiolus Society, which has planned its annual show on Aug. 11 at the Eastfield Mall on Boston Road. The free exhibit is planned from noon to 5 p.m., with gladiolus being available for sale after 5 p.m.

Adams, owner of Pleasant Valley Glads & Dahlias of Agawam, said his love for gladiolus comes from enjoying all the "fantastic colors and sizes."

"I also dabble in hybridizing," he said, adding he is celebrating his 50th catalog this year that includes an endless array of traditional nursery offerings and 2007 Gladiola introductions including Green Crush, Hot Pink, and Marilyn J, a 2007 All-America Selection named Star Performer, and a 2007 Dahlia introduction named Lavadandy.

For individuals interested in the world of gladiolus, the Western Massachusetts Gladiolus Show is an ideal way to see firsthand what is available.

"This is the largest show in Massachusetts and Connecticut," he said.

Judges for the show include Adams, Bob Pike, Warren Wilcox, and Roger Adams Sr. With more than $700 in prize money up for grabs, Adams anticipates some stiff competition for the 12 classes of gladiolus planned by the organization.

Adams encourages area residents to filter through the show to see the wide variety of colors and sizes of the gladiolus, as well as vote for the "People's Choice" Award.
