SPRINGFIELD – Mayor Domenic Sarno appointed Stephen Lonergan as Treasurer and Collector on Dec. 22. Lonergan is taking over after former Treasurer and Collector Christopher Caputo resigned to take the same position in Agawam.
Lonergan previously served as Springfield’s treasurer and collector from 2010 to 2020. He most recently worked as the director of municipal finance and town accountant for East Longmeadow, along with being the former president of the Massachusetts Collector Treasurer Association.
Lonergan, a Springfield resident, formally made his return to the position on Jan. 3.
In a press release, Sarno and Chief Administrative and Financial Officer TJ Plante expressed support for Lonergan’s return to his former position. Sarno highlighted Lonergan’s “wealth of knowledge” on municipal finance.
“I want to welcome back Stephen Lonergan. Stephen brings a wealth of knowledge in municipal finance and his familiarity with Springfield, having previously served as our Treasurer [and] Collector for 10 years, will allow him to hit the ground running,” said Sarno.
Sarno also expressed his gratitude for Caputo’s service to Springfield. He thanked the former treasurer and collector for serving a crucial role during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I want to thank Chris Caputo for this service to our city, it is bittersweet, but he had a great opportunity and will be missed. When he came on board our city was dealing with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and working with our Health Department he was able to successfully navigate the situation in our Collectors and Treasurers Office to keep their municipal finance operations going for our residents and businesses,” said Sarno.
Plante highlighted his support for Caputo’s tenure and Lonergan’s return to the treasurer and collector position.
“It is good to have Stephen Lonergan back with the City of Springfield. These are very difficult positions to fill throughout the commonwealth and we are fortunate to have had two excellent candidates in Caputo and Lonergan. Stephen’s familiarity with our Treasure/Collectors Office will make this transition easy and without any interruption of service for our constituents,” said Plante.
In a statement, Lonergan thanked city leadership while looking ahead to his return as treasure and collector.
“I want to thank Mayor Sarno and CAFO Plante for their confidence in my abilities. I am looking forward to returning to serve as treasurer/collector for my hometown,” said Lonergan
