SPRINGFIELD – Established in 1902, The Springfield Conservatory of Music is the oldest music school in the United States. After an abnormal year with COVID-19, both online and in-person music lessons are now available for a variety of instruments.
According to owner Patricia Surniak, the decision to close the Conservatory at the beginning of the pandemic was hard.
“It was hard to bring the business through a forced closing for COVID-19. It was the only time in over 100 years we were forced to close. I did a lot of listening and interacting with other studio owners and business owners to find the right teaching and cleaning solutions,” she said.
Surniak said that through conversing with other business owners and teachers she was able to adapt.
“I spoke to a lot of business owners to keep a positive mindset to adapt all teachers to teaching online. I am extremely happy to still be in business and the Conservatory is very strong now,” she said.
The Conservatory of Music offers private lessons in piano, keyboard, voice, guitar, violin, bass guitar, drums, ukulele, saxophone, flute, cello, clarinet, mandolin, percussion, trumpet, trombone, tuba, oboe, recorder and bells.
They host online classes which include a lesson book and assisted set-up. In-person classes are also back at their 869 Sumner Ave. location. Students as young as the age of three are able to sign-up for a variety of lessons.
Along with private lessons, the Conservatory also hosts group lessons and participates in recitals.
Lessons at the Conservatory of Music are available Monday through Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
