Springfield teachers earn "Excellence" awards

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield School Committee honored the city's 26 teachers recognized as 2012 "Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Award" recipients last week during its meeting on March 1. The award acknowledges an educator's high degree of professionalism, subject knowledge, effectiveness, creativity, student impact and support for colleagues.

Among the sponsors of the Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Awards are the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation, the Davis Foundation, the MassMutual Financial Group, Southworth Paper Company of Agawam and the YMCA of Greater Springfield.

This year's recipients will receive a cash award of $500, an engraved plaque, a three-month gym membership to the YMCA of Greater Springfield, an invitation from WGBY to take an online course, and $100 scholarships given by Western New England University, Springfield College, and Westfield State University to take a graduate course.

They will be recognized during a ceremony at The Log Cabin Restaurant in Holyoke on May 10.

The recipients are: Kerry Savino, Sharon Ralls, Tom Brunette, Glenna Ryan, Christine Nicholson, Maria Serrazina, Katherine Willer, Karen Ross, Jason Walas, Laura Rita, Yvonne Brown, Alessandra Smith, Conor Martin, Vera Denyk, Taryn Smith, Janet Settembro, Julia St. Martin, Marjorie Osherow, Jamilla Jones, Ronald Roux, Haabiba Whitney, Rhonda Castillo-Cage, Kathy Balakier, Andrea Cooley-Strom, Maureen Moynihan and Barbra Provost.
