SPRINGFIELD A group of volunteers recently relocated the Valley Photo Center (VPC) to the second level of Tower Square in record time and are now looking forward to its first exhibit in the new space in January.

"We had a good crew of dedicated volunteers help out and it went quite smoothly and quickly," said Gene LaFord, VPC director.

LaFord noted that the reopening in early January will feature an open submission exhibit titled "In the Eye of the Beholder."

"This is a give us your best work type of show," added LaFord.

Entry fees will be $25 for two photos ($20 for subscribers and students) and $10 for each additional photo submitted. The deadline to drop off submissions is Dec. 23.

Drop-off locations for photos include In A Flash, 477 Breckwood Blvd., Springfield; Gicle'e of New England, Main Street, Monson; Hunt's Photo in Hadley, and the Valley Photo Center, 1500 Main St.

LaFord encouraged area photographers to participate in the initial show to ensure a "giant success" in the new space.

Also in early 2007, a new series of workshops are being planned to develop the VPC into a first-class photo center.

"We are starting small with the intention of growing this series to include a whole range of offerings," said LaFord.

Workshop topics in the coming months will include "Intro To My New Camera," "Taking Better Pictures," "Understanding Black & White," "PhotoShop, Intermediate PhotoShop, and Advanced PhotoShop," "Legal Issues for the Photographer," and "How to Matt and Frame for Exhibition."
