WEST SPRINGFIELD — The Municipal Recycling Facility (MRF) Advisory Board will honor resident Diane Crowell with the Outstanding Recycler of the Year Award at the annual America Recycles Day on Nov. 14, for her efforts in the town to educate and organize green initiative throughout the town.

Michael Pattavina, Waste Management coordinator for the Department of Public Works explained that Crowell was a member of the Town Council, but left after the realization that she could accomplish more as a citizen. He has served as the town's liaison for the majority of Crowell's projects.

"She is extraordinary in her ability to see issues and bring them to the attention of the town," Pattavina said. "She uses her citizen's voice to her advantage, to promote the issues she feels are important. She is a reliable set of eyes in the community that have helped me establish priorities [within the town's needs]."

He added, "She has a unique ability to convene people. She's the conductor; she orchestrates [the projects]. The award is recognition and an acknowledgement that citizens can make a difference in the community — she deserves a lifetime achievement award."

In nominating Crowell for the award, Pattavina listed some of her accomplishments, which include the organization of an annual Earth Day fair and cleanup; recycling programs in the Boys & Girls Club, police substation and food pantry; recycling presentation and MRF tours for fourth graders; and lobbying state politicians to support bills like the "Bottle Bill."

Crowell was unavailable for comment.
