WEST SPRINGFIELD The West Springfield Planning Board will conduct a hearing to consider a Special Permit application and consider a site plan review for a new Raymour & Flanagan furniture store on Riverdale Street at 7:05 p.m. Sept. 21 in the second floor auditorium of the J. Edward Christian Municipal Office Building.

The furniture store would replace the closed Showcase Cinemas at 895 Riverale St.

Raymour & Flanagan is one of the largest furniture retailers in the nation with 59 showrooms in six states. It currently employs 2,900 people.

According to papers filed with the city, the furniture chain would purchase the property from National Amusements, demolish the existing building and build a two-story 71,550 square-foot Raymour & Flanagan store.

If approved the company would also make improvements to the sites parking area.

There would also be 25,000 square foot addition to the building that, according to the blueprints, would house two other retail businesses.

A spokesperson for the furniture company declined to answer questions at this time concerning what kind of businesses Raymour & Flanagan might seek as tenants on the site or how many jobs would be created by the new store. That information would be forthcoming in the process of seeking approval from the city and building the new structure.
