Date: 11/20/2015

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Residents and businesses can expect little change on their bills in the upcoming tax season, as the Town Council voted on the split tax rate at its Nov. 16 meeting.

With District 2 Councilor Lida Powell and District 1 Councilor Angus Rushlow absent from the meeting, the Council needed four votes to pass the new rate.

Councilor Bruce Gendron moved that the Town Council adopt of a shift factor of 1.517. While it was the first proposed factor, it passed 4-3. Town Council President John Sweeney, Vice President Brian Griffin and Councilor Bridget Fiala voted against the proposal.

According to West Springfield’s Chief Financial Officer Sharon Wilcox, the residents will see no difference on their bills. The tax rate will remain $16.99.

Businesses and industrial properties will see an increase of two cents, raising the rate from $33.19 to $33.21.

With a shift fact of 1.517, the residential percentage is 54.1403 and the commercial percentage is 45.8597.
