Blue Angels soar through Westfield

WESTFIELD On the weekend of June 25 and 26 the Blue Angels came to town to perform at the 2006 Westfield International Air Show.

The event was hosted by the 104th Fighter Wing Barnes Air National Guard and Base at 175 Falcon Drive.

The Angels participated in two days of flying while in town and also visited area events and places such as the Chamber Breakfast and the Boys and Girls Club.

The Commander of the Blue Angels Demonstration Team, Commander Steve Foley is a native of Charlestown, Mass. He will be passing on his command of the Angels this season.

The Angels are the United States Naval Flight Demonstration Squadron (USNFDS) and provide a mix of formation flying and solo routines using F/A - 18 Hornets. The pilots perform approximately 30 maneuvers during the arial demonstration that runs about an hour and fifteen minutes. The team is stationed at Forrest Sherman Field, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida during the show season.

The squadron spends January through March training pilots and new team members at Naval Air Facility El Centro, California.

The Blue Angels are scheduled to fly nearly 68 air shows at 35 locations in the United States during the 2006 season.
