EMT program receives accreditation

WESTFIELD The state Department of Public Health has awarded training institute accreditation to the Westfield State College Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program.

The new state accreditation classification upgrades the program and allows the college to offer state EMT examinations, said Edward Mello Jr., director of the Westfield State EMT program.

"We used to have to apply to the state for each course we taught," Mello said. "The new accreditation increases our level of responsibility."

The Westfield State program offers two courses during the year through the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education. The Emergency Medical Technician Basic Course is offered this fall, beginning Sept. 6.

"The course enables the student to become EMT certified after completing the state test," Mello said. "The course is also for anyone interested in first aid knowledge. It is one of the highest-level courses one could take in that area."

Some students who take the EMT training become members of the college EMT Club, which has representatives at all major events on campus in case of a medical emergency.
