WESTFIELD The Columbia Greenway Project is currently undergoing a design review by the Massachusetts Highway Department. It is hoped that it will be concluded and the construction will begin by late spring of 2007 State Senator Michael R. Knapik (R-Westfield) said to Reminder Publications.

"It's going to be a rather unique trail," said Dan Podaski owner of New Horizons Bike Shop in Westfield in speaking of the Columbia Greenway Project. "Because we have nine bridges through three and a half miles of the trail. .. I don't know of any trail like this in the northeast."

The large scale project, according to Knapik, is to have a trail that extends from Northampton through Westfield and Southwick and down to New Haven Conn..

"There is a very popular bike trail up in Northampton and one in Cape Cod that people are familiar with. Massachusetts has been relatively slow in getting these online. A group of students from the Powdermill Middle School six or seven years ago were very active in creating positive support for it," Knapik said.

The Westfield aspect of the project will be completed in three construction phases. The first phase will be from the Westfield River through the City's downtown corridor ending near the Amelia Park Children's Museum and Skating Rink. The next phase would take the project through to the Southwick town line. The third phase would consist of the rehabilitation of the railroad bridge that spans the Westfield River.

There will be a meeting open to the public tomorrow night, Aug. 24 to discuss this project. Call the City Hall for more details and information.
