SOUTHWICK — "Have a Seat in Southwick" is not like other public art auctions that have been sponsored by other Cultural Councils throughout the region, rather, it's affordable and functional, according to Patricia McMahon, vice chair of the Southwick Cultural Council.

The auction, which will take place on July 28 at Town Hall, will feature 14 hand-painted portable pioneer chairs featuring Southwick's most valuable landmarks and attributes, including The Ranch Golf Club, Congamond Lake, agricultural and recreation.

"The first goal [of this fund-raiser] was to provide something affordable to the community, which is why we provided money for the chairs and a stipend to the artists," McMahon explained. "The money raised will fund educational programs. The state has cut back on the amount of funding for Cultural Councils and we have to supplement that money through fund-raisers such as this."

The minimum bid for each chair will be approximately $175, she noted.

Several of the chairs are currently on display through July 27 at Diane L. Mason Agency, 504 College Highway, Southwick Public Library, 454 College Highway, Southwick Florist, 636 College Highway, and The Ranch Golf Club, 65 Sunnyside Road.

The auction will take place on July 28 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 454 College Highway. The Charlie Galvin Band will provide musical entertainment. Admission is free.
