WESTFIELD — The YMCA of Greater Westfield will be offering two new certification classes this winter aimed at dogs and cats.

Karen Liebchen, health and safety services coordinator at the YMCA, is also an American Red Cross instructor, and will be leading the two classes next month. "Emergency Care for Your Canine" is planned Feb. 17 from 6 to 10 p.m., and "Emergency Care for Your Cat" will be offered Feb. 24 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Liebchen and her family have three cats, Midget, China, and Lottsa, so she knows the importance of being able to help an animal in distress.

"By learning pet CPR and first aid, you not only protect yourself but protect your animal," Liebchen said during an interview with Reminder Publications.

Liebchen noted that dog first aid is a valuable resource for dog owners as well as dog handlers for therapy dogs, police K-9 units and search and rescue units. Liebchen added that cat owners and handlers will also find a wealth of information at the cat first aid class.

The evening course includes symptoms and care for common ailments and emergencies; instructions for creating a pet first aid kit; giving medications and how to recognize emergencies; tips on maintaining your pet's health and well-being, and first aid guidance on caring for a multitude of canine or feline health conditions.

All participants will receive a Red Cross manual which includes a DVD. The cost for either class is $45 for YMCA members and $60 for nonmembers. Classes must be prepaid at the YMCA.

"Learn the skills you may need to save the life of a canine or cat companion," Liebchen added.
