WEST SPRINGFIELD Love charades? Want to win some cold cash fast?

The Majestic Theater on Elm Street recently announced its summer lineup of programming which includes a new feature on Wednesday nights - Charades for Cash.

Majestic officials wanted to add a new offering to its extensive summer calendar and did a pilot run earlier this month to test the charades idea. The feedback proved positive and theater officials decided to run with the idea, according to Marie Susen, company manager, who recently spoke to Reminder Publications.

Susen explained that Charades for Cash will feature up to 20 players each Wednesday, beginning at 7 p.m. The rules are simple: the player will act out a clue of a word or phrase for the more than 200 audience members to guess. The word or phrase to be acted out will be created by submissions from the audience. The player who successfully gets the audience to guess their word or phrase the fastest through three rounds of play wins a cash prize. Cash prizes are $75 for first place, $50, second place, and $25 for third place.

First, second and third place winners from each Wednesday will be entered into the finale slated Aug. 22. Charades for Cash evenings are planned June 20, 27, July 11, 18, 25, and Aug. 1, 8 and 15. Cash prizes for the finale evening are $150 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place.

All participants will receive a standard hand signals sheet to ensure that each player can quickly act out a clue to their word or phrase. Standard hand signals include touching your nose with your index finger and pointing to the correct guesser when the correct guess is called out, and holding up the number of fingers that corresponds to the number of words in the phrase.

General admission is $3 and all audience members will be asked to submit a word/phrase for the evening's play. Doors open at 6 p.m. The Majestic also features an intimate caf that features a wide variety of delectable desserts and a host of beverages.

Advance registration for up to 15 players per week will be accepted by calling the Majestic box office. Players must be at least 13 to register. At least five walk-in players will also be chosen each Wednesday.

Persons interested in just attending the event do not need to make reservations.
